چکیده

By R. A. E. TIIor IsoN, S. M. MICHAELSON AND J. W. HOWLAND W ITH THE INCREASED USE of microwave generating systems, some with maximum output in excess of 1 megawatt, information on the l)iobogic effect of microwaves is of importance. Microwave energies range in the radio-frequency region of the electromagnetic spectrum from 300 megacycles/sec. (Mc./sec.) up to 300,000 Me/sec. This is equivalent to a wave length range of 100 cm. down to 0.1 cm. Microwave radiation is produced by electron tubes such as klystrons, magnetrons and thyratrons, which are capable of peak plate voltages in excess of 200 kibovolts. As a result, hard x-rays, ( up to 250 KVP ) can be produced during their operation. \\Then functioning, such tubes are shielded to reduce incident x-radiation to tolerance limits. In general, electromagnetic radiation of shorter wavelengths than visible bight produces a photoelectric or an ionization effect, amid those of longer wavelengths ( infrared to radio-frequency region ) produce ii thermal effect. A potential occupational hazard among radar workers is simultaneous exposure to x-radiation and microwaves. Leukocyte changes produced by x-irradiatiomi in many amiimab species have been webb described. Leukocyte changes following microwave exposure are primarily described in rodents. During studies on the biologic effect of microwaves it was observed that x-irradiated and simultaneous microwave and x-irradiated dogs exhibited characteristic differences in leukocvte response.

A review on combined biological effects of microwave and other physical or chemical agents

With the development of science and technology, microwave has been used in many fields such as industry, military, medicine and communication. People are living in a lapped and dynamic electromagnetic environment. Concerns about potential hazards of microwave are getting increasing attentions. The single biological effects of microwave were widely discussed which was considered harmful. Relevan...

Exposure to Mobile Phone Radiation Opens New Horizons in Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment

Alzheimer’s disease, the most common type of dementia and a progressive neurode-generative disease, occurs when the nerve cells in the brain die. Although there are medications that can help delay the development of Alzheimer’s disease, there is cur-rently no cure for this disease. Exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation may cause adverse health effects such as cancer. Looking at th...

Effects of Gamma Irradiation on Proliferation and IL-5 Production of Peripheral Blood Lymphocytes

Gamma irradiation is routinely used for suppression of lymphocyte function in transfusion and transplantation procedures. In recent years, some investigators focused on the effects of ionizing radiation on special aspects of lymphocyte function and considered the possibility of its clinical application for treatment of some immunological disorders. In this study, we evaluated the effects of fiv...

Intercellular adhesion molecule 1 knockout abrogates radiation induced pulmonary inflammation.

Increased expression of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1; CD54) is induced by exposure to ionizing radiation. The lung was used as a model to study the role of ICAM-1 in the pathogenesis of the radiation-induced inflammation-like response. ICAM-1 expression increased in the pulmonary microvascular endothelium and not in the endothelium of larger pulmonary vessels following treatment of...
